Use Cases

On this page, we follow the journey of a young investigator....

Example 1.  Grant deadline

Professor Anon Y. Mous is up against his R01 deadline.  He needs to work on the Specific Aims and Preliminary Data, but really needs to offload some of the other forms.  His FI write the Budget Justification and Vertebrate Animals sections based on documents he shares.  He sees drafts, asks for edits and gets the final documents well in advance of his deadline.

Example 2.  Regulatory Documents

Professor Mous got a great score and is expecting funding. But now he needs institutional approval.  He sends the successful grant proposal to his FI, who turns it into a IACUC / IBC / IRB protocol according to the institutional template provided.  2 weeks later the annoying revisions come back, but his FI will handle all the responses and edit the copy for resubmission as well.

Example 3.  Recruiting

Dr. Mous now needs a qualified postdoc.  He purchases a Recruiting Services Fractional Pack for a flat fee.  His FI works with HR to place the job ad, screen incoming CVs, phone-interview candidates, return transcripts of responses and schedule interviews using the PI's existing calendar.  The PI and his team make the final selection and HR does the institutional onboarding.  Mission accomplished!

Example 4.  On-site training (Chicago labs only)

The new postdoc is great but doesn't have any training in X.  There are several other employees who could help but they are slammed with current projects.  Dr.  Mous thinks all of them could use a refresher.  Dr. Mous delegates his FI. to provide one-half day of in-person training:  a 1-hour PowerPoint, followed by 3 hours of one-on-one consultation with team members to discuss specific applications.  Afterwards, all followup questions are answered by phone or email at no extra charge.

Example 5.  Special Purchases

Just as everything is in place the lab freezer dies!  It was 15 years old and no one in the lab has ever purchased one.  Even worse, it will cost more than 5K to replace it so the university will want at least 3 quotations– and that takes time.  Dr. Mous calls his FI to get on the case urgently.  Soon, the PDF quotes from 3 vendors show up in his inbox.  The machine is installed under budget and the samples are saved.
